What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine has been practiced in North America for over 125 years and it involves a functional medicine and individualized approach to health care that aims to identify the underlying cause of disease and dis-ease. According to the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors, naturopathic medicine is a health care system that blends scientific-based knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Built on a patient-centred approach, naturopathy involves the use of therapeutic methods and substances that supports the body’s natural ability to heal. Through prevention, treatment and a variety of natural-based therapies, including herbal medicine, nutrition and supplementation, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, lifestyle counseling, traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture and exercise, the goal of naturopathic medicine is to heal the root cause of an illness or condition and to treat the whole person — mind, body and spirit.

Is naturopathic medicine for me?

If you’ve ever felt frustrated with chronic conditions and health and lifestyle related concerns that don’t respond well to conventional medicine and harsh drugs or if you are experiencing side effects due to medications that you must take regularly, naturopathic medicine may be the answer you’re looking for. Many patients who choose the naturopathic path benefit the most, as naturopathic doctors take the time to understand the context of the patient’s illness, to listen to their story and to communicate the most effective form of treatment to get to the root of their health issues and to help bring the body back into balance. Naturopathic doctors then help design a long-term action plan and follow up regularly to answer the patient’s questions and to encourage them to stick to the plan.

How do I choose a naturopathic doctor?

It’s best to first acknowledge the health issue or concern at hand and at least have an initial idea of the goal you’d like to achieve. It’s okay if you’re not fully sure or if you have a lot of questions — questions are good. We want to help you help yourself become aware, get better and prevent any future illnesses or pain. So how do you choose the best naturopathic doctor for you? Ask questions.
